Program Notes

Two Dances was composed for the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance (LAMP) composition academy. It was inspired by electronic dance music and electronic production techniques. My relationship to dance music is somewhat complicated by the fact that I love groove and rhythm, but am not very good at dancing (at all).

But dancing isn’t about being good, it’s about movement and expression. In the first movement, Hesitate, the music constantly overthinks itself, gets stuck, dances around the subject, and takes some time before it finds its footing. Eventually the music gathers up enough confidence to step onto the dance floor for the second movement, Animate, where the same musical material is approached from a new angle.

Two Dances was premiered by the Friction String Quartet at the LAMP New Music Festival on June 22nd, 2018.
