Program Notes

Breath Chasing Wind is a piece about small things emerging, growing, and coming together. Musically, it’s something of a frankenstein’s monster. The various themes, rhythmic motives, and harmonies all had earlier homes in music that I composed between December 2020 and September 2022, but it’s only in Breath Chasing Wind, that they really hit their stride. At it’s core, Breath Chasing Wind serves as my love letter to groove, progressive metal, and video game soundtracks.

Breath Chasing Wind was originally composed in 2022 as a quintet for flute, clarinet in Bb, violin, viola, and cello. This version was premiered by the University of British Columbia Contemporary Players Ensemble.
